- Abstract
Why did the first stamps printed in Mauritius carry the words "Post Office" rather than the usual "Post Paid"? It is a philatelic mystery, and those of us immune to the joys of stamp collecting may be content for it to remain that way. But Helen Morgan's enthusiasm for these stamps - the "most coveted scraps of paper in existence", she writes in the Blue Mauritius - is catching, and their transformation into rarities with a price tag of more than $1m is not without interest… The subtext of Morgan's book is the allure of scarcity in an age of mass production.
