- Summary
William Avery was a senior partner in the firm of W. and T. Avery, scale makers. He collected stamps from a young age, and specialised in particular countries when he was older. After Thomas Tapling's death, Avery 'was looked upon as the buyer of anything especially rare and the possessor of one of the finest collections' in England (Philatelic Record, November 1905). He acquired one penny and two pence Post Office stamps in unused condition in 1893.
