Summary

Jacques Amable Legrand was a French physician who took up philately in adulthood, collecting seriously from around 1861–62. His abilities in the philatelic arena first became apparent in 1865 when he published an article on watermarks, followed a year later by his invention of the perforation gauge – a metric rule for measuring the space between the perforations on stamps – a version of which is still in use.

He successfully plated the Post Paid issue, establishing that the Post Office stamps did not belong to either plate. He was one of the first collectors to own specimens of the Post Office stamps (1869-70).
