Summary

Théophile Lemaire was dealing in stamps by the age of twenty. By 1899 he was well established in premises on one of Paris’s better streets, the Avenue de l’Opera, and employed almost thirty people in his stamp business. Along the way the French dealer, 'a typical French gentleman … always smiling', had exhibited at numerous philatelic exhibitions, been regularly rewarded with medals, and published his own stamp catalogues, albums and magazine. His fame was assured – and perhaps his taste for the Post Office acquired – with the purchase of Dr Legrand’s great collection in 1897.
