- Summary
Vernon Roberts was inspired by Thomas Tapling to take up stamp collecting, and was much involved with the Manchester Philatelic Society. He bought the Jerrom letter soon after the dealer W. H. Peckitt acquired in from the original discoverer, and held on to it for seven years.
In an article written about the time Roberts relinquished the letter back to Peckitt, it was noted:
We hear that his taste for old china and rare engravings is again re-asserting itself with disastrous effect to his stamps, but judging from the past we have no doubt that he will, sooner or later, return to his old love. (Philatelic Record, March 1905)
