Summary

Philatelic crime takes the shape of theft, fraud and fraudulent use. In the late nineteenth century, in a widely reported case, a Parisian philatelist, Gaston Leroux, was murdered for his stamps.

Real and imagined, crime was inseparable from the 'Post Office Mauritius' stamps. Fiction writers from the 1890s onwards had spun tales around them in novels, short stories and in poetry, invariably involving criminal activity. The dearth of new discoveries in the twentieth century gave rise to the occasional rumour of such, and saw the publication of several novels involving crime and the 'Blue Mauritius'.
