Evans, Edward Benjamin

Occupation
Philatelic writer, Post Office owner, Soldier and Stamp collector
Summary

Known to all the philatelic world as Major Evans, Edward Evans was one of England's most distinguished philatelists and a major contributor to the literature.

The London Philatelist noted in their obituary of the Major:

The works and papers of Major Evans are distinguished by great lucidity and accuracy, two of the most important qualifications that a writer on a scientific subject can possess. He had a keen sense of humour, which constantly peeps out in his writings, and he could seldom resist the temptation of making a pun when he saw an opportunity of doing so.

Major Evans acquired both the Marquay ball envelope and Joseph Barnard's estimate for creating the Post Office stamps when he was in the island in the late 1870s.
