Summary

Mauritius is a small Indian Ocean island east of Madagascar, governed successively by the Dutch, French and British in its 400 plus year-old history. Since 1968 Mauritius has been an independent country. Volcanic in origin, the island is dotted with maginificent mountains, amid rolling cane fields. Famed for its tropical beaches and the extinct dodo, Mauritius is also known for the extremely rare one penny and two pence "Post Office" stamps.
